SANITY IN THE MODERN WORLD by Dane Rudhyar. From 1949, this unique series of four articles exposes the roots of many 21st Century problems. Jupiter and Saturn are symbols of all established and inherently static social-cultural and religious processes, the foundations upon which social normality is determined. Uranus and Neptune are representatives of forces and spiritual agencies which operate toward the close of the cycle of a society - to build the seed of a future civilization.

CYCLES OF SATURN by Dane Rudhyar. Saturn in a birth-chart indicates the manner in which the entire past of the Universe is focused upon that individual, conditioning his or her cycle of life-development. Saturn conditions, but does not control. It says: Here is your starting point. The universe, before you came, has gone so far; now, move on from here in your own way, the best you can. What you will accomplish from that point to the moment of your death will be your contribution to the universe.

A Bold Warning 50 Years Ahead of Its Time!
"The trend toward technocracy (envisioned by Howard Scott and his Technocracy movement) and militarism (with its 'magical' symbol, the Pentagon) have consistently and perhaps irrevocably sapped the very foundations of American democracy, as termites do with the beams that support so many of our suburban homes. . . .
What I mean by 'technocratized' is controlled in all its functions and its thought-processes by an elite of technicians just as amoral and ruthless as the American Howard Scott would have been if he had had power, or the German, Albert Speer, who engineered the remarkable survival and development of German industry during World War II . . ."

Exposes fascism in art and music, as well as in culture and politics. Outlines the cycle of cultures and the sweep of civilization.
There comes a time, suggest Rudhyar, when for the sake of our spiritual heritage, we should consider breaking away from established patterns and values that have been imposed upon us through our culture. 'Spirit creates, culture reproduces.'

BEYOND INDIVIDUALISM: The Psychology of Transformation by Dane Rudhyar, with a Foreword by James Fadiman, Ph.D.
"The first time I read this book, it was difficult for me to stay with the argument, to maintain my attention. I saw that my educational up-bringing has lessened my capacity to pay attention. The second time I read the book I could see how it has begun to work on me, I was willing to walk along with Rudhyar and notice things as he pointed them out. My defensiveness had diminished, my pomposity about being a 'real' psychologist had deflated. I realized I was in the presence of a great mind who was willing to clarify the place in which I found myself.
I suggest you read this book for pleasure, not for enlightenment (for you are already enlightened), not for scholarship, not for the sake of 'keeping up,' but to give yourself a larger set of windows to view your life from. It is a pleasure to know that books like this are still offered to us. It is a personal pleasure to commend it to you."

WHAT'S YOUR ASTROLOGICAL AGE? by Dane Rudhyar reveals how the long cycles of Saturn and Uranus can be seen as hands of an astrological clock marking out your life-span in astrological time. Each "astrological age" carries its own set of opportunities and challenges. A SEED, by Dane Rudhyar
Will You Be A Seed for a New Future?
In this short, provocative work from 1973, Rudhyar reveals the great choice ahead - the Way of the Seed or the Way of the Leaf. "If you have a winter followed by a spring, but there was no harvest in the fall, no seed will germinate during the spring, and you will have to start at the very beginning, into the most primitive time of manifestation. . . . We can follow the mass vibration and decay, like all the leaves of the world, in fall (however beautiful the golden leaves may be) they will have to decay and become manure for the future of civilization. But it is only the 'seed men' and 'seed women' that really count, and it is those you should look for." ADDED 5 November 2005. Read it now . . .

DANE RUDHYAR - Four Pentagrams; Paeans; Granites; Prophetic Rite, Ron Squibbs, Piano
Dane Rudhyar (1895-1985), one of the most unjustly neglected composers, may finally be getting his due. Acknowledgment of his work seems to be growing: a couple of excellent websites offer most of his published writings on music along with some wonderful recordings, and Deniz Ertan has published the first book, other than Rudhyar’s own, about his music, ideas, and art (University of Rochester Press, 2009). During the last century, only a handful of recordings of Dane Rudhyar’s music appeared, but the new millennium has already seen fine recordings by Richard Cameron-Wolfe (Furious Artisans, in 2003), Steffen Schleiermacher (Hat Art, 2004; MDG, 2005), and Richard Zimdars (Albany, 2009). Now comes the world-premiere recording of “Four Pentagrams,” composed in 1924-26 and revised in 1971-74. HOW TO EVALUATE & SOLVE EMOTIONAL PROBLEMS by Dane Rudhyar. The essential aim of any psychologically valid astrology is to help individuals to respond ever more successfully to the challenges of everyday life. The true aim of astrology is to help the individual in seeing his or her "crises", small or big, as phases of growth – and not as either senseless and chaotic occurrences or steps on the road to personal frustration, defeat and disintegration.

THE EXALTATION OF THE PLANETS by Dane Rudhyar. In this article from 1944, Rudhyar explains how declination should be related to the concept of 'exaltation'; zodiacal longitude, to the principle of 'rulership'. Understanding this, we can better understand why particular signs of the zodiac have been traditionally mentioned as the 'signs of exaltation' of particular planets; otherwise the system of exaltation would appear puzzling and without any consistent order.

Today's World-Crisis
In one of Rudhyar's most prophetic articles,
THREE CONJUNCTIONS OF URANUS-PLUTO: 1965-66, we are warned, "Now the real thing is about to happen, and obviously many people will not like it. The institutionalized minds of political leaders, university regents and boards of trustees or directors will fight against the change, just as classes and groups owning privileges and special positions have always fought against inevitable social, political and cultural changes."

New York sanctions same-sex marriage and the Himalayan Republic of Nepal includes third-genders in its census. In SEX AND COUNTERSEX, Rudhyar discusses astrology and human sexuality in a new way - Saturn in a woman's chart is shown to symbolizes her countersexual nature, while natal Jupiter represents a man's countersexual nature. In SEX FACTORS, Rudhyar explains how the natal Sun and Moon factor as sexual symbols while natal Jupiter and Saturn symbolize countrasexual traits.

Since we posted AGE DIFFERENCE IN RELATIONSHIPS last month, a newly formed age gap marriage has been subjected to media ridicule. In AGE DIFFERENCES IN MODERN MARRIAGE, Rudhyar writes, "today the major planets - at least beginning with Jupiter - are to be found in practically the same zodiacal degrees in the birth-charts of the husband and the wife. . . . differences between the charts apply only to the personal planets - Mars, Venus, Mercury, and the Sun and Moon."
